Tadpoles celebrate 25 years in the water

May 19th was a big day for the Tadpoles Swimming Club for the Disabled as members and helpers, past and present, marked the Club's 25th birthday with a celebratory meal. Over 130 people who have played a part in the Club's history came together for the occasion, which took place at the Felbridge Village Hall.

Allan Rees, co-founder of the club, welcomed the guests and outlined the needs of the future at a time when retirement is looming for many of the current team of voluntary helpers. "We have a big challenge ahead" said Allan. "Over the next year or so, we have to find a new generation of people to run the club, to make sure that week after week, people with all kinds of disability can enjoy the wonderful freedom of movement that water provides."

The Club began in 1982 after its founders joined with others in the town to campaign for an indoor swimming pool in East Grinstead. Some years later, they raised money to provide better equipment for disabled people at the King's Centre. Every Thursday evening, the Club has exclusive use of the pool and trained helpers are on hand to provide water therapy in a calm and friendly atmosphere.

During the evening presentations were made by Chairman Doreen Powell to Eric Mackie, the Uphill Trophy and Mel Berger, the Taylor Trophy for progress and perseverance.
